JFK Health Brain Tumor Center

The JFK Brain Tumor Center was established in 1997. This center brought together experts with extensive training from all over the country to diagnose and treat adult and pediatric patients with tumors involving the nervous system. These tumors may arise from the brain or spinal cord, or may spread to these areas from somewhere else in the body (for example, the lung, the breast, colon or skin).

For over a decade, this specialized team of physicians has been providing superior, state-of-the-art, comprehensive clinical care and support to patient’s who suffer from tumors of the central nervous system, and their families. This multidisciplinary team includes neuro-oncology, neurosurgery, pediatric neurosurgery, neuroradiology, radiation oncology, neuropathology, and nursing. In addition to this core team, the program incorporates other disciplines as well for the benefit of their patients. These specialties include hematology/oncology, neuro-ophthalmology (for visual problems), otoneurology (for balance, dizziness and hearing problems), epilepsy (for patients who suffer from seizure), JFK physical medicine and rehabilitation services, neuropsychology, adult and pediatric critical care specialists and support services.

This core team meets weekly at a Brain Tumor Board meeting, where a synopsis of each new patient’s history is presented and the pertinent imaging studies are reviewed. This occurs for patients diagnosed within the Institute or from a referring physician outside of the Institute. We also provide this service for patients who are self referred or wish a second opinion review of their films and records. This group, as a team, then formulates a “tailored for the patient” plan of treatment. Our center is a comprehensive program for the diagnosis and management of brain and spinal tumors situated at a single site in the state of New Jersey. We are dedicated to our patients’ overall quality of life in addition to treating their specific tumor.

We have a Skull-Based Tumor Program, Acoustic Neuroma Program, Gamma Knife Radiosurgery Program, Minimally Invasive Spine Program, Endoscopic Neurosurgery and a Malignant Glioma Program.  We offer advanced imaging techniques, including Functional/DTI MRI Imaging. We offer advanced clinical trials including brain tumor vaccines, gene therapies and noval therapies. We were the first United States site certified to offer the Novocure device, Optune.

What should you know if you’re diagnosed with a brain or spinal tumor?

A patient diagnosed with a brain or spinal cord tumor should, if possible, seek out a comprehensive program that includes a neuro-oncologist, a physician who specializes in the diagnosis and management of Central Nervous System tumors. A specific treatment plan will be tailored to each individual. Some tumors do not need active treatment and may simply be followed with imaging studies. Other patients will need one or more of the combination of surgery, radiation, chemotherapy or clinical trial. Our Neuro-oncology Nurse Navigator, Patricia Anthony, will help guide you though the journey of diagnosis, management and recovery.
